Making Your Next Move Easier

Like modern day nomads, many people go through the ordeal of moving day every year or two. Some have even managed to make a science of it, but for the majority of people, the entire process is a headache they'd rather avoid. While that may not always be possible, you can make it easier on yourself, so long as you have the right approach and know who to contact for help.

Moving Day Looms

The earlier you set your moving date, the more time you'll have to prepare, and the easier everything else will become, from planning to execution. While there are limitations to how early you can set your move date you should take advantage of every day until then. From the moment you discover that you'll need to move there are things that can be done to make the process easier, starting with packing boxes.

Start your packing efforts with non-essential items, such as out of season clothing, seasonal decorations you won't need before your move, and any yard equipment that isn't going to be of use. Drain fuel from the engine on either your snow blower or lawn mower, and pre-stage snow shovels or hedge clippers for easy transfer to a moving vehicle. You can also use this time to start contacting moving companies or rental van services for quotes and reservations. While you might not be able to finalize any plans until you have a firm move date, most companies allow for rescheduling of reservations that have been pre-paid.

Get an Early Start

Once you have access to your new residence you can get started with your move, but that doesn't mean it has to all happen on the same day. Your real deadline is the move out date with your current residence, so make the most of the interim time period by moving what you can on your own. The more you can move on your own in the days leading up to your moving day the less time and money you'll spend getting the entire move over with.

If you require moving assistance, and you don't have friends or family available to help, focus on hiring teams of two. This will keep you out of the way of a professional, speed up the loading and unloading process, and leave you free to direct their efforts or focus on more important things, like cleaning or last minute packing. A good moving crew can maximize the use of space in a moving van or container, so the less you can be in the way, the more effective they'll be.

Moving to a new house is an unpleasant chore in the best scenarios, but by maximizing the use of the time you have you can ensure that your move is as smooth as possible. Plan ahead, make the most of your resources, and don't wait until the last minute for anything.
